" Nomadland " is a american drama film written ,edited ,produced and  directed by Chioe Zhao .

It won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 93rd Academy Awards, in addition to winning Best Director for Chloe Zhao and Best Actress for McDormand  from a total of  six nominations . It won Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Director at the 78th Golden Globe Awards and won four awards including Best Film at the 74th British Academy Film Awards.

It stars Frances McDormand  as a vandwelling woman who leaves her hometown after her husband dies and the sole idustry closes down to be houseless and travel around the United States . David Strathairn features in a supporting role , as well as real life nomads Linda May , Swankie and Bob Wells as fictionalized versions of themselves .

The Film is based on the 2017 non - fiction book Nomadland : Surviving America in the Twenty - First Century by Jessica Bruder. Music by : Ludovico Einaudi , Cinematography : Joshua James Richards, Produced by : Frances McDomand , Peter Spears , Mollye Asher , Dan Janvey , Chloe Zhao .
